Crypto Hackers Lose Millions During ‘Black Friday’ Market Meltdown Due to Panic Selling

Last week’s massive crypto crash didn’t just hit traders, it also wiped out millions in stolen funds held by hackers who, caught in the panic, misplayed the market with disastrous timing.

Blockchain sleuth Lookonchain has tracked at least six wallets linked to known hackers that lost more than $13.4 million after panic-selling ether ETH$3,889.53 during the downturn.

The hackers in question appear to be part of a group of cybercriminals who have recently engaged in cryptocurrency theft. The mention of “6 hacker wallets” losing over $13.4 million suggests a coordinated effort, possibly linked to a known hacking syndicate.

Buying high, selling low

The sell-off began when one wallet offloaded 7,816 ETH at $3,728 per coin, a move that coincided with the steepest part of the crash. As prices dropped further, five more wallets followed suit, contributing to the broader market dump.

However, rather than holding the sold assets in stablecoins or attempting to launder the ETH, the hackers rebought the same amount — 7,816 ETH — at $4,159 as the markets bounced back, locking in another round of losses.

By Oct. 18, blockchain analysis revealed that the total loss from these trading missteps reached $13.4 million.

Given the scale of the funds (about $29 million in the latest transaction alone), these hackers are likely sophisticated actors with access to advanced tools for exploiting vulnerabilities in decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, exchanges, or smart contracts.

Panic selling

The hackers’ trading patterns during volatile market conditions suggest that while they’re experienced in exploiting the ecosystem’s players, they react to market swings like any other over-leveraged trader would: with poor timing and emotional decision-making.

Lookonchain labeled the behavior as “panic selling,” while some crypto observers even joked that the attackers might be “great hackers, terrible traders.”

It wasn’t all their money

However, the hackers likely acquired those funds through hacking. So while the losses are real, the funds were likely not earned but stolen.

Blockchain analysts believe the ETH originated from earlier attacks, meaning the hackers were trading with assets they hadn’t bought in the first place.

In that sense, the losses may not hurt in the way they would for ordinary traders.

Think of it this way: someone finds a suitcase of cash, gambles it poorly, and walks away empty-handed. They’re worse off than before but not out-of-pocket, since the money they lost wasn’t theirs in the first place.

Maybe the hacker group should’ve just stuck with hacking and maybe start looking for a portfolio manager for criminals. Still, the missteps reveal something about the current state of the crypto landscape. Even sophisticated attackers can falter under pressure.

Wash trading

There’s another possibility out there. While they were ‘terrible traders’, they may also have been laundering their ill-gotten gains through these trades, strategically dumping tainted funds during the panic to then buy back clean funds, even if at a loss.

As one X poster said, “It’s a form of money laundering. While they are puking, on the other side, they are buying. Then they reverse after it rises. Loose the stolen money, earn on fresh money.”

The Oct. 10 market correction affected traders across the board, triggered by a combination of macroeconomic pressures and thinning liquidity in decentralized markets that led to a $500 billion slump.

While hacks and exploits are usually viewed in isolation, last week’s developments show how on-chain markets, by design, apply the same rules to everyone: whether they’re retail traders, whales, or hackers.

In a post on Friday, Bloomberg reports that Maelstrom, founded by Arthur Hayes and former BitMEX M&A Head Akshat Vaidya, is actively working to raise $250 million for investment in mid-sized crypto firms.

The fund, tagged as Maelstrom Equity Fund I, is expected to cover the acquisition of six crypto companies, with each purchase expected to range between $40 million-$75 million. Notably, there will be a strategic focus on blockchain service providers, including trading infrastructure and analytics startups.

In a recent X post, Vaidaya, who acts as the managing director, provides more insights into this fund, highlighting the problem and proposed solution.

Vaidaya describes the new initiative as the first control-buyout PE fund to focus solely on the crypto ecosystem. The Maelstrom Equity Fund I is to achieve profitability in three main ways. First of which is providing founders of supporting blockchain services to access clean exit opportunities at reasonable valuations.

Furthermore, the PE fund would also aim to help new TradFi entrants to the crypto space navigate investment in businesses by providing them access to “an acquisition-ready portfolio of cash-flowing, growing businesses for future buyers of crypto businesses like Robinhood, Charles Schwab, X, Wealthfront, etc.”

Finally, Hayes, Vaidaya and newly hired partner Adam Schlegel are also looking to offer capital allocators such as pension funds or other family offices the opportunity to invest capital at scale, e.g, 9 figures+, into the “most fundamentally valuable” sectors of the crypto economy, i.e., the blockchain supporting business, without having to worry about token exposure or market volatility.

Maelstrom PE Fund: High Risk Or Not?

Interestingly, Bloomberg notes that Maelstrom’s proposed equity fund comes amidst a challenging period as PE firms are globally struggling to attract capital. In the crypto market, PE investment is reportedly down to $1.4 billion, representing a 65% decline from the peak of 2021, which suggests a significant business risk for Hayes and partners.

However, a series of high-profile acquisitions amidst a rebounding market since the FTX crash, coupled with the mechanics of the Maelstrom, provides an appealing context for investors. Bitcoin is once again caught in the crossfire of a high-stakes geopolitical standoff. This time, the knock-on effects are being felt across every corner of the crypto market. The script is familiar: The return of U.S.–China trade tensions has triggered a sharp correction in Bitcoin, echoing a pattern seen earlier this year. When escalating tariffs sent risk assets spiraling for weeks on end, BTC corrected by 30%.

U.S.-China trade tensions: another macro shock, another Bitcoin slide

An ‘Uptober’ that began in traditional style with a Bitcoin rally of nearly 18% quickly soured after President Trump announced fresh 100% tariffs on Chinese imports and sweeping export controls on critical software.

In his Oct. 17 post on X, Alderoty called that framing “a convenient narrative, but a lazy and inaccurate one,” and tried to pivot the conversation to who actually uses crypto and why. President Donald Trump’s embrace of crypto, paired with his return to the White House, has fueled enormous profits for his family—north of $1 billion to date, his son Eric Trump said.

A Financial Times investigation found that President Trump and his family’s crypto businesses have profited $1 billion pre-tax. When asked if the calculations were accurate, Eric Trump told the publication that the true figure was “probably more.”

It’s worth noting that Donald Trump is estimated by Forbes to be worth $7.1 billion, meaning that his share of these crypto profits could represent a sizable chunk of his net worth.

World Liberty Financial is arguably the most prominent Trump-backed crypto venture, with Donald Trump and his three sons all listed as co-founders. So far, the project has only rolled out its USD1 stablecoin and sold its WLFI governance token; however, plans are in place to expand further into the world of decentralized finance and offer lending services.

The FT estimated that World Liberty Financial generated more than $550 million in sales of its WLFI token, which included investments from Chinese crypto billionaire Justin Sun and the United Arab Emirates-based crypto fund Aqua 1 Foundation.

The family’s crypto empire also includes President Trump’s NFT trading cards, as well as Donald Trump and the first lady’s official meme coins—which were both launched in January. Eric and his brother Donald Trump Jr. also launched a Bitcoin mining and treasury firm called American Bitcoin in a team-up with miner Hut 8.

President Trump’s growing ties to the crypto industry have been a major point of contention in U.S. politics this year.

In May, senators slammed President Trump for hosting a dinner party for the top holders of his meme coin, with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) calling it “an orgy of corruption.” In fact, the dinner was so controversial that it attracted hundreds of protestors outside the venue.

During Trump’s push to pass the stablecoin GENIUS Act—his administration’s first pro-crypto bill signed into law—the president’s crypto conflicts dominated legislative debate and delayed the approval process.

Eric Trump’s admission of the family profiting more than $1 billion is just the latest chapter in this administration’s controversial relationship with crypto.

Many social media users reacted by sharing a scene from the 2015 film The Big Short, which tells the story of the 2008 financial crisis. Applied to this situation, users argued that Eric Trump isn’t “confessing” about sizable profits amid potential ethical conflicts, but rather he is “bragging” about it.

“Wipe out billions with a single angry tweet. Make billions from crime,” Mert Mumtaz, founder of Helius Labs, said on X, referring to Friday’s flash crash that took place after Trump stated that he’ll apply “massive” new tariffs on China.

“Something tells me the other side will politicize crypto next election,” Mumtaz added.

Why Russia became the top European country for crypto adoption – DL News

Russia has overtaken the UK as the top European country in terms of crypto adoption, according to Chainalysis data.
Attempts to evade sanctions and to hedge against inflation are driving the surge.
DeFi activity in Russia is now three-and-a-half times larger than it was in mid-2023.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has fueled a rapid embrace of crypto technology within the country’s borders, according to a new study.

Russia is, by a wide margin, the top user of crypto among European nations, according to crypto forensic firm Chainalysis.

Russia has seen $379 billion in crypto inflows between July 2024 and June 2025, a year-over-year increase of more than 48%, the firm found. That placed the country ahead of the region’s longtime leader, the UK, which saw $273 billion in inflows — a relatively modest 32% increase from the year prior.

“I strongly believe that the growth and adoption of crypto assets in Russia has been driven by the war and sanctions regimes,” Matthias Bauer-Langgartner, Chainalysis’ head of European policy, told DL News.

“Crypto assets are not just casually used in order to evade sanctions. There is a real strategy, a long-term strategy behind them.”

Evasion tactics

The war’s effect on crypto usage with Russia is twofold. First, the Russian government has turned to digital currencies in order to skirt international sanctions, which have limited the country’s access to US dollars and to global payment systems such as SWIFT.

Second, those sanctions have battered the ruble, and inflation-weary Russians are turning to crypto and DeFi in order to protect their savings, according to Bauer-Langgartner.

Russia is subject to a record 19 sanctions packages from the European Union. The most recent, issued in September, targets Russia’s use of crypto.

“As evasion tactics grow more sophisticated, our sanctions will adapt to stay ahead,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement last month.

“Therefore, for the first time, our restrictive measures will hit crypto platforms. and prohibit transactions in crypto currencies.”

In 2024, Russian lawmakers legalized the use of crypto for international payments. A month later, President Vladimir Putin signed a law legalizing crypto mining.

“Putin is now a vocal cryptocurrency advocate,” the think tank Rand noted in a recent report. “At December’s annual Russia Calling investment forum, he claimed that ‘no one can prohibit the use of Bitcoin.’”

The report cited several examples of Russia’s newfound affinity for crypto, including an alleged scheme in which Rosatom, a state-owned nuclear technology company, laundered more than half a billion dollars in stablecoins for Russian clients who were trying to evade US sanctions and acquire “sensitive US technology.”

Indeed, transfers of over $10 million increased 86% in Russia, according to Chainalysis data. That’s double the 44% growth the firm saw in the rest of Europe during the same period.

Russia’s DeFi embrace

Even as Russian firms increasingly use crypto for international payments, the use of crypto is banned within Russia.

“The Russian government is actually not very keen for crypto adoption within the larger population, because it’s something that can hardly be controlled,” Bauer-Langgartner said.

That hasn’t stopped regular Russians from turning to digital assets to protect their savings.

While inflation has slowed this year, it remained elevated at 8.2%, the Russian central bank said in September.

“Because there is this ban, we can see a lot of DeFi growth, where people go to no-KYC exchanges, peer-to-peer platforms, or so-called instant exchanges, where they can quite easily link their Russian, sanctioned bank account to a crypto trading platform,” Bauer-Langgartner said.

DeFi activity is now three-and-a-half times larger than it was in mid-2023, according to Chainalysis data.

Despite the ban on retail use of crypto, Bauer-Langgartner believes the Russian government has largely turned a blind eye to Russians’ use of tools such as instant exchanges.

“It’s not a massive priority amongst the many things the Russian government is currently thinking of,” he said. “Enforcement could still be enhanced, and it potentially will be in the future.”

Just this month, however, Russian Deputy Finance Minister Ivan Chebeskov appeared to suggest the Russian government should move to accommodate retail crypto use.

“We have millions of citizens, by some estimates 20 million, who use cryptocurrency for various purposes,” he said, according to a report from Russian news agency Tass.

“Since they are already using it, we need our own infrastructure to protect citizens and to have both economic and technological benefits.”

To be sure, crypto remains a small part of Russia’s sanctions evasion efforts.

Crypto assets aren’t liquid enough to power one of the world’s largest economies, according to Bauer-Langgartner. Additionally, they’re easily traced, making it simple for centralized stablecoin issuers to freeze suspect funds at the request of US and European law enforcement agencies.

“These analytical capabilities that we have and constantly develop, they have a massive effect on the usability of funds with sanctions exposure,” he said.

“Regulation in Europe and the US is working, because it gives you a tighter net and a real blocker in being able to onboard funds coming from Russia.”

Why Is the Crypto Market Down Today?

The total crypto market cap (TOTAL) witnessed a slight decline today, led by Bitcoin (BTC), as it stood below $108,000. Altcoins, on the other hand, showcased a different story, with Ethena (ENA) leading the gains with a 16% rise in 24 hours.

The Crypto Market Needs To Find Its Way

The total crypto market cap dropped by $27 billion in the past 24 hours, now sitting at $3.60 trillion. Despite the decline, it remains above the crucial $3.58 trillion support, a level that has previously prevented deeper corrections during volatile phases in the digital asset market.

The lack of bullish momentum across the macro financial market continues to pressure TOTAL. If broader economic uncertainty and investor caution persist, the crypto market could lose its footing, triggering a decline toward $3.49 trillion.

However, a potential rebound from current levels could reverse losses. If TOTAL manages to reclaim $3.67 trillion as a support base, it would indicate renewed optimism. Sustained momentum from this point might push the crypto market cap toward $3.73 trillion.

Bitcoin Continues Its Decline

Bitcoin continues to lead the market’s decline after failing to establish a stable support level during the recent sell-off. The crypto king is currently trading at $107,065, reflecting the broader market weakness.

The bearish sentiment intensified as Bitcoin slipped through the $108,000 level, confirming strong downside pressure. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) indicates growing bearish momentum, suggesting that further losses are possible. If this trend continues, Bitcoin’s price could fall through $105,000, with an extended drop potentially sending it toward $101,477.

However, if investors step in to defend key support levels, Bitcoin could rebound from current prices. A bounce back above $108,000 would indicate renewed buyer confidence, enabling BTC to push past $110,000. Such a move would invalidate the bearish thesis and hint at a potential short-term recovery.

Ethena Notes A Rise

ENA emerged as the top-performing token among altcoins as it diverged from Bitcoin’s broader market trajectory. The cryptocurrency surged 16% in the past 24 hours, lifting its price to $0.465. This upward momentum positions ENA as a standout performer.

Currently, ENA is eyeing a potential breakout above the $0.466 resistance level. Successfully breaching this threshold could push the altcoin toward $0.519. A move past that point would be crucial for ENA, as it would mark a recovery from October’s decline.

However, risks remain as the Parabolic SAR indicator stands above the candlesticks, signaling possible downward pressure. If bearish momentum strengthens, ENA’s price could slip below $0.436, extending losses toward $0.389. Such a drop would invalidate the bullish thesis.

Coingecko 2025 Q3 Crypto Industry Report Highlights Trends

The latest Crypto Industry Report from CoinGecko reveals that the crypto market actually accelerated in Q3 of 2025. Total market capitalization jumped another 16.4%, adding over $563 billion to reach an incredible $4 trillion.

According to the Crypto Industry Report, this quarter marked crypto’s “second leg” of recovery.

Total Market Cap Hit $4 Trillion

The growth in the market was not only triggered by the increase in prices, but also by the number of participants. The volume in the trading market changed direction, and it moved to the upside, indicating the recovery of traders. This excitement sparked crypto’s second major recovery phase after a slow start to the year.

Stablecoins Reached a New Record High

Stablecoins had one of their best quarters ever, with market cap rising $44.5 billion (+18.3%) to an all-time high of $287.6 billion. USDe by Ethena was the first to take off and increased 177.8% to emerge as the third-largest stablecoin.

Tether (USDT) increased by $17 billion; however, its market share fell to 61% as USDC and USDe have become more widespread. The stablecoin industry has been showing its strength and gaining significance in the crypto ecosystem.

ETH Reached a New All-Time High

Ethereum (ETH) emerged as one of the largest winners in the Crypto Industry Report. In August, ETH reached a new all-time high of $4,946, surging 68.5 percent to capture a new position at $2,502. There was an increase in institutional inflows with the launch of Ethereum spot ETFs.

Companies like Bitmine Immersion and SharpLink made treasury purchases, also contributing to this development. There was also an increase in the volume of daily trading to $33.4 billion, reflecting trust in the long-run value of Ethereum.

BNB Exploded to New Heights

BNB also started with an explosive quarter. By the end of Q3, it increased by 57.3 cents to hit a new all-time high of $1,030. Its daily trading volume doubled from $0.8 billion to $1.7 billion. This growth followed PancakeSwap’s Binance integration and the launch of perp DEX Aster. The momentum of BNB continued even up to the beginning of Q4, reaching a new peak of $1,369.

DeFi Made a Powerful Comeback

The total value locked (TVL) increased by 40.2 percent and grew, increasing from $40.2 billion to $161 billion. This was a comeback due to the ETH price surge and a resurgence in protocols based on stablecoins. DeFi market share has increased, reaching 4.0% in Q3 as investors became interested in new DEX tokens, such as Avantis (AVNT) and Aster (ASTER).

Centralized Exchanges Recovered

CEXs regained footing with spot trading volumes jumping 31.6% quarter-on-quarter to $5.1 trillion. Binance led the way with 40% market share and over $2 trillion in quarterly volume. Bybit also made a big leap, moving from sixth to third place after a 38% growth. Coinbase, though still the largest in the U.S., slipped to tenth place globally as rivals outperformed it.

Perp DEX hits Record Volumes

Perp DEXs hit a record quarter, with trading volume up 87% to $1.8 trillion. Hyperliquid maintained its lead with a 54.6% market share. However, new entrants such as Aster, Lighter, and edgeX are closing the gap with their powerful incentive programs. Aster even reached an all-time high of $84.8 billion in daily volume in September.
