a16z Crypto Invests $50 Million in Solana’s Jito Protocol –

Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto arm, known as a16z Crypto, has made a major move in the Solana ecosystem. The venture capital firm announced a $50 million investment in Jito, a Solana-based protocol that improves how the blockchain runs.

Jito confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter), calling it a milestone moment. According to Brian Smith, executive director at the Jito Foundation, the deal gives a16z a share of Jito’s native tokens. He described it as the largest single investment ever made in Jito, adding that it reflects a long-term partnership between the two.

Building the Future of Solana

Jito plays an important role in how Solana works behind the scenes. Solana, one of the fastest blockchains in crypto, relies on validators. These are computers that help confirm transactions. These validators must “stake” tokens as a security deposit to keep the network honest.

But staking can tie up large amounts of money for long periods. That’s where Jito’s liquid staking solution comes in. It lets validators stake tokens while still being able to use or trade them. This way, it improves liquidity across the network.

Smith explained that Jito is “deeply tied to Solana’s growth,” helping developers run transactions faster and more efficiently.

Strengthening Long-Term Ties

Deals like this are common in crypto, where investors buy tokens directly from a project to support its growth. a16z has been active in this area, recently investing $55 million in LayerZero and $70 million in EigenLayer.

With Jito, a16z is signaling deeper confidence in Solana’s ecosystem. The partnership not only gives Jito more capital to grow but also highlights how major investors continue to see long-term potential in blockchain infrastructure,even in a quiet market.

Professor Coin: Bitcoin, Energy and the Future of Sustainable Crypto

This is the ninth installment of the Professor Coin column, in which I bring important insights from published academic literature on cryptocurrencies to the Decrypt readership. In this article, I discuss Bitcoin energy usage, and the future for sustainable cryptos.

When you hear the words “Bitcoin mining,” you might picture giant warehouses packed with whirring computers, gobbling up electricity like there’s no tomorrow. That image isn’t far from reality.

Since Bitcoin launched in 2009, its proof-of-work (PoW) system has been both its greatest strength and its biggest controversy. It keeps the network secure and decentralized, but it also ties digital finance to very real energy and environmental costs.

How big is Bitcoin’s energy footprint?

The go-to benchmark is the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index (CBECI), which estimates that Bitcoin mining consumes electricity on the scale of mid-sized countries. But here’s the catch: Bitcoin’s energy use doesn’t rise smoothly. Instead, it follows market cycles. When Bitcoin’s price surges, miners switch on more rigs, pushing up hashrate, difficulty, and electricity demand. When prices dip, older or less efficient machines go dark.

Stoll, Klaaßen and Gallersdörfer (2019) pegged annual consumption around 46 TWh back then, with ~22 megatons of CO₂ emissions More recently, new data suggests that consumption has grown substantially.

According to the 2025 Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report, Bitcoin’s annual electricity usage is now estimated at 138 TWh, with network-wide emissions of approximately 39.8 Mt CO₂e. The same report also notes that 52.4 % of the energy used by miners comes from sustainable sources (renewables + nuclear) as of 2025.

These updated figures help us see that while Bitcoin’s environmental footprint remains significant, the composition of its energy mix is also shifting—offering a more nuanced narrative for 2025.

Beyond carbon: the full footprint

New research asks a broader question: what’s the total environmental cost? A 2023 paper by Chamanara et al. (2023) estimates Bitcoin mining at ~173 TWh, adding in CO₂, water, and land impacts.

Meanwhile, the UN University warned that mining draws heavily on freshwater in regions with scarce supply. And it’s not just the running of machines: de Vries (2021) estimated tens of kilotons of e-waste annually from discarded ASIC rigs, since miners churn through hardware every couple of years. This holistic picture means Bitcoin’s footprint is now seen as multi-dimensional: electricity, emissions, water, land, and waste.

Proof-of-work vs Proof-of-stake

Here’s where the story gets interesting. Not every blockchain guzzles energy like Bitcoin. In September 2022, Ethereum’s Merge replaced PoW with proof-of-stake (PoS). Overnight, its energy use dropped by ~99.9%. Same user experience, radically different environmental profile. This one move showed the world that crypto doesn’t have to be a climate villain.

Ethereum’s success has raised uncomfortable questions for Bitcoin. If another major chain can deliver security and functionality without the same energy burn, should Bitcoin follow?

Purists say no: PoW is what gives Bitcoin its incorruptible, apolitical security. Critics counter that clinging to PoW risks political backlash, carbon taxes, or even outright bans in certain jurisdictions.

Can mining go green?

Not all miners are environmental bad actors. Some argue they are part of the solution, not the problem. In Texas, mining farms strike deals with grid operators, curtailing power when demand spikes. In Iceland and Canada, miners plug into cheap hydropower. Recent engineering research even explores using mining to monetize excess methane from landfills or stranded renewables that would otherwise be wasted.

The optimistic narrative goes like this: Bitcoin mining could act as a “buyer of last resort” for surplus green energy, smoothing out variability in solar and wind production. Studies like Hossain & Steigner (2024) and others suggest that, under the right conditions, mining could become an economic driver for renewable projects.

But the jury is still out—whether miners truly accelerate the green transition or just opportunistically chase cheap power depends on location, incentives, and regulation.

The road ahead

So where does that leave us in 2025? Here are the big takeaways:

  • Bitcoin’s footprint is real and significant. We’re not just talking electricity, but also carbon, water, land, and e-waste.
  • Design matters. Ethereum’s Merge proved that PoS can slash energy costs without breaking a network. Bitcoin, by contrast, has doubled down on PoW.
  • Nuance is needed. Not all mining is equal—coal-based rigs in Kazakhstan are very different from hydro-powered farms in Quebec.
  • Policy pressure is rising. Expect governments to ask not just “how much power?” but “what kind of power, where, and with what externalities?”

Bitcoin will always carry the energy question with it. Whether it becomes a climate villain or an unlikely green ally depends on choices made by miners, policymakers, and communities in the next few years.

For now, one truth is clear: in crypto, the invisible isn’t weightless. The future of digital money is tied, quite literally, to the power grid.

Bitcoin’s Moment? Analyst Urges Traders To Swap Gold For Crypto

A well-known crypto analyst is urging investors to rethink the old trade of gold for Bitcoin, calling current market signals a rare buying window.

According to CryptoQuant author Joao Wedson, a set of bottom signals in the BTC/Gold ratio are flashing, and that could mark a turning point in how the two assets move against each other.

Rare Signals Point Toward Bitcoin

Wedson’s chart shows two tags — one blue and one green — that line up with a normalized oscillator he says is at a low. According to him, the blue tag marks a bottom in the BTC/Gold ratio while the green tag appears when both indicators reach lows together.

 

When that has happened before, it often came at times of steep Bitcoin drops and big swings in market mood. According to Wedson, today is a “historic opportunity” and that investors should now “trade gold for Bitcoin.”

Arthur Hayes, the former BitMEX CEO, has echoed a similar view: “We’re exactly there right now,” he said, calling the setup one of the most compelling in recent years. The message from both analysts is clear: look closely at this moment.

Bitcoin Seen At A Deep Value Zone

Other market watchers find Bitcoin trading two standard deviations below its ideal range. This type of reading has in the past lined up with accumulation phases, not market tops.

Based on CoinMarketCap data, BTC was trading near $107,400 at press time and had risen 0.45% in the previous 24 hours. Year-to-date gains stood at 15%, and Bitcoin had gained nearly 55% over the last year.

Those figures were cited to show that the currency has already moved a lot this year, but that some measures still point to cheaper-than-usual levels.

Institutional Shifts May Be Underway

Wedson specifically urged institutional players who have been buying up gold to rethink allocations. The BTC/Gold ratio has long been used as a gauge of confidence between the two stores of value.

When it hits a bottom, some market cycles have followed with Bitcoin regaining ground quickly and, in some cases, moving toward fresh highs within months. This is the historical pattern his signal is tied to.

Some of the language used by analysts was blunt; the oscillator was described as “basically screaming: time to sell gold and buy Bitcoin,” a phrase that underlines how strong the signal appears to those calling it.

Retail Losses Hit Billions

While the ratio story points to upside, a separate disclosure shows a different risk for ordinary investors. Reports from 10X Research say retail buyers lost around $17 billion after piling into public Bitcoin treasury firms that traded at premiums.

Those companies — including MicroStrategy (now Strategy) and Metaplanet — issued shares and used the cash to buy Bitcoin, but the equity premiums collapsed as Bitcoin’s run slowed.

The report added that investors overpaid by about $20 billion in inflated equity premiums, leaving many with losses while insiders and executives benefited earlier in the move.

Astra Nova, an AI-powered entertainment platform, has confirmed a major loss involving its newly launched RVV token.

In an October 18 statement, the project said the breach was linked to a compromised account belonging to one of its third-party market makers.

Astra Nova Loses Over $10 Million in RVV Token

The team said the attacker struck soon after the token’s debut, exploiting a compromise in the market maker’s account.

Astra Nova did not disclose the total amount of tokens drained from the exploit.

However, blockchain analyst EmberCN estimated the loss at approximately $10.3 million.

The analyst said on-chain data shows that the attacker withdrew 860 million RVV tokens—about 8.6% of the total supply—from the project’s minting contract. These tokens were later exchanged for Tether’s USDT stablecoin.

The massive sell-off triggered an immediate market reaction. According to CoinGecko, RVV’s price plunged more than 50% within 24 hours, sliding from $0.26 to roughly $0.0103 as of press time.

EmberCN added that about $8.2 million of the proceeds were moved to two centralized exchanges, including Gate and KuCoin. Another $2 million remains in an on-chain wallet currently under observation.

Considering this, EmberCN questioned Astra Nova’s account of events, arguing that the transaction pattern does not resemble typical hacker behavior.

“Which hacker would convert stolen assets into USDT and hold onto them? And even transfer them directly to a CEX? USDT can be frozen, and going straight to a CEX—where are there hackers this foolish,” EmberCN wrote.

Token Buyback and Bounty Offer

In response to the skepticism and the market crash, Astra Nova reaffirmed that it was a victim of an external compromise, not internal foul play.

The project announced plans to repurchase the same number of RVV tokens affected by the breach. The move aims to stabilize the token’s liquidity and reassure investors.

At the same time, the Astro Nova team also launched a 10% bounty program for anyone who returns the stolen assets to a verified recovery address.

The project’s team said it would not pursue legal action if the full amount is returned. It also described the offer as an opportunity to “close this peacefully.”

“If you return the full amount to the verified recovery address shared on our official channels, no further action will be taken, and the bounty will be transferred once confirmed by our forensics team,” the project stated.

Polymarket and Kalshi are now considered the top crypto prediction markets, but the space was once led by other players taking very different approaches.

Intercontinental Exchange’s move to invest up to $2 billion into Polymarket and Kalshi’s $300 million financing have turned a once-niche corner of crypto into a mainstream trading category.

“The real prize for ICE is not just clearing contracts but monetizing the data, selling odds as sentiment factors alongside rates and credit where every rumor pays a fee,” said Michael Ashley Schulman, partner and CIO at Running Point Capital Advisors, told Reuters.

But the prediction market boom is the culmination of years of technical experiments, regulatory fights, and product re-thinking, not a passing trend.

Where’s Augur and Gnosis?

Long before Polymarket and Kalshi arrived, the decentralized prediction market sector was already crowded with Gnosis, which at its peak in August 2020 had over $85 million in total value locked, followed by Augur with over $13 million, per data from DefiLlama.

Augur, unveiled during the ICO era and founded in 2014 by Joey Krug, Jack Peterson, and Jeremy Gardner, went live in 2018, promising decentralized prediction markets with a native reputation token (REP) and an oracle system for reporting outcomes.

While the idea was solid on paper, early users quickly ran into practical problems. Third-party node services were uneven, and blockchain sync issues and high Ethereum gas fees in those days slowed markets.

As Alchemy, a blockchain infrastructure firm that also offered services to Augur, explained in a blog post, initially Augur launched with a “free third-party node service that was slow, unreliable, and frequently provided incorrect blockchain data,” costing the project months of recovery work.

Mike Garland, head of product at Alchemy, explained to The Defiant that Augur and Gnosis “were pioneers when they started prediction markets built on crypto rails, testing the limits of what decentralized applications could do at a time when blockchains were still in their infancy.”

“Many of the technical hurdles they faced, like scalability, transaction costs, and wallet UX, reflected the broader state of Ethereum at the time,” he added.

Garland noted that Polymarket is now also using Alchemy’s products.

Some suggested that Augur jumped the gun on its token, raising hype and funds before the platform had real users or liquidity, and then struggled for years just to get a basic app working on Ethereum. Odyssey Finance CEO Zane Hauffman noted in an X post that back in the days, Augur was “really awful, and also was hyped up for many, many years before actually launching.”

“You needed to download a desktop app, which was an Ethereum full node you needed to maintain to use it. It took hours just to connect. Gnosis v1 (Omen) was at least usable,” Hauffman wrote.

As DefilLlama founder @0xngmi noted in an X post, the “craziest thing is that Augur was #1 at some point, if they had kept going, they could have gotten Polymarket’s 9bn valuation.”

The Defiant reached out to Krug, one of Augur’s co-founders, multiple times for comment, but didn’t receive a response.

Foundation for New Rivals

Gnosis, the biggest prediction platform before Polymarket stepped into the game, took quite a different path.

Unlike Augur, which rushed its token and struggled to attract users, Gnosis, founded in 2015, focused on building the tools first: its Conditional Tokens Framework let anyone create markets and turn event outcomes into tradable tokens.

By July 2020, Gnosis had stopped running its consumer prediction site and focused on its core tech, while DXdao, a community-run collective, used that technology to build Omen, a decentralized platform for trading on event outcomes.

Ironically, Gnosis’s technology became a key ingredient for later winners like Polymarket, which runs outcome tokens as ERC-1155s on Polygon, while Gnosis itself shifted focus to other projects like Safe, CoW Exchange, and Gnosis Chain, dialing back its consumer-facing prediction market efforts.

Gnosis did not respond to The Defiant’s request for comment.

What Makes Polymarket and Kalshi Different

Polymarket and Kalshi tried to solve two basic questions: “Where does the liquidity come from?” and “Is the product legal and reliable for customers I care about?”

Polymarket’s edge came from a low betting threshold, clean UI, low-cost rails, and a strong on-chain ethos. Leveraging Gnosis’s conditional-token primitives, it mints outcome positions as ERC-1155 tokens on Polygon, keeping per-trade fees minimal. A hybrid off-chain/on-chain order book enables near-instant fills and familiar order types for retail users.

Yet, despite these advantages, Polymarket has still struggled with the reliability of its resolution mechanism as Universal Market Access oracles have frequentlysparked controversy, often favoring whales over average traders.

Kalshi took a different path, prioritizing legal certainty and institutional distribution with off-chain order matching, custody, and clearing, rather than building markets that run natively on blockchains.

This model keeps settlement, client custody, and compliance within traditional financial rails and regulators’ oversight. And it paid off in November 2020 as Kalshi secured approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, becoming the first federally regulated prediction market of its kind in the U.S.

To begin bridging the gap, Kalshi hired John Wang, a crypto influencer, as it seeks to deepen its ties to the crypto community.

Polymarket, by contrast, operates offshore. However, recent developments show it also plans to enter the U.S. market, as in July, the company acquired QCEX, a regulated derivatives exchange and clearinghouse, for $112 million, providing Polymarket with the necessary regulatory approvals.

The company is also said to be planning to launch its native token, POLY, though details and timing have yet to be disclosed.
