Senate

Mary Peltola is trying to turn one of 2026’s most important Senate opportunities into a Democratic pickup, but Alaska’s unusual top-four primary adds another layer of uncertainty. Prediction markets have the general election essentially tied on approximately $1 million in volume.

The Alaska Senate primary is not a normal primary night story.

The state’s nonpartisan top-four system means every candidate appears on the same ballot Tuesday, with the top four vote-getters advancing to November regardless of party. That creates a crowded, strategically messy contest where the immediate question is not who wins the nomination, but who makes the general election field and how the primary changes the odds in one of the Senate map’s most consequential races.

For Democrats, the central bet is Mary Peltola. The former congresswoman is trying to turn her unusual Alaska coalition into a Senate win over Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan. That would give Democrats a potential pickup in a state they need if they are going to overcome losses or close calls elsewhere on the 2026 midterm election map.

Alaska is a Senate-control race

Alaska is one of the few Republican-held seats Democrats have put squarely into the Senate-control conversation. They need a net gain of four seats to reach 51, and the party’s cleanest path depends on protecting states such as Michigan and Georgia while flipping opportunities like North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Texas and Alaska.

That makes Peltola’s run unusually important. Democrats cannot assume they will hold Michigan, especially after Abdul El-Sayed’s narrow primary win and a general election race that has tightened against Republican Mike Rogers. If Michigan slips, a state like Alaska could become part of the replacement math rather than an optional upside play.

Peltola has already shown she can compete in terrain that is deeply Republican. She lost her House seat by only 2 points in 2024, even as President Donald Trump carried Alaska by 13 points. That gap is the foundation of the Democratic case. She has a local brand and a coalition that can run ahead of the party in a state where conventional national labels do not always tell the whole story.

Recent polling has strengthened that case. Several surveys have shown Peltola leading or effectively tied with the incumbent, with affordability and the state’s high cost of living emerging as a central part of her message.

Her campaign has also kept its distance from national Democratic figures, including declining support from former Vice President Kamala Harris, another sign that Peltola is trying to preserve her Alaska-first appeal rather than nationalize the race.

Markets see a coin flip

The prediction markets picture is about as close as it gets.

Kalshi’s party-based general election contract is trading at 50–50 on $582,000 in volume. In the candidate market, Kalshi gives Peltola a 53% edge over the incumbent’s 48% on roughly $130,000. Polymarket has the opposite read: incumbent Sullivan is at 51% and Peltola at 49%, with about $399,000 traded.

That is not a market declaring Peltola the favorite. It is a market saying the outcome is still a coin flip, and that Alaska has moved firmly into the first tier of Senate races to watch.

The split also captures the structural tension in the contest. Peltola’s polling and personal profile make her a credible Democrat in a state where Democrats rarely get credible statewide opportunities. But Sullivan remains an incumbent Republican in a state with a strong GOP lean, and that baseline will matter even more once the primary field narrows and Republicans consolidate.

Tale of two Dan Sullivans

The race has another wrinkle. There is a challenger named Dan Sullivan running on the same top-four ballot as the incumbent Dan Sullivan. The second Sullivan is not the senator, but the shared name has created voter confusion concerns and generated national attention around a contest that was already strange enough.

That issue matters because Alaska’s top-four system makes every vote in the primary meaningful. The incumbent is not at serious risk of missing November, but a similarly named candidate can still complicate the count, reduce clarity in early returns, and add another unpredictable variable to a race where the margins may be thin.

The top-four structure also creates incentives for outside groups to consider candidates beyond their own preferred one. Super PACs and other groups have poured money into elevating lesser-known or fringe candidates to manipulate the field and influence which contenders advance.

It is a familiar ranked-choice strategy problem in a different format. A party may benefit not merely from boosting its own candidate, but from helping the right opponent survive into November.

Why the primary field matters

Peltola should be well positioned to finish in the top four because of her statewide profile and consolidated Democratic support. The Republican side is more divided, with Sullivan, the second Sullivan, and other candidates competing for attention on a shared ballot.

That fragmentation could give Peltola a cleaner primary result than the November environment will suggest. If Republicans scatter votes across multiple Republican candidates, she can appear dominant on Tuesday without becoming a clear favorite in the general election.

Once the electorate is reduced to four candidates and the Republican coalition has fewer places to go, the race could become more competitive for the incumbent, or remain unusually favorable to Peltola if her cross-party support is real and Republican candidates split votes.

That is what makes Tuesday less about a nomination and more about the shape of November. Peltola’s raw vote share, the incumbent’s share, how much the second Dan Sullivan draws, and whether a fringe candidate backed by outside money advances all will factor into the general election. Those numbers will tell traders more than simply seeing Peltola’s name in the top four.

Governor race has its own surprise

The governor’s race to replace term-limited Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy is also drawing serious market attention.

Democrat Tom Begich leads the broad primary market on Kalshi at 49%, with $262,000 in trading volume, ahead of Republican Lt. Gov. Treg Taylor at 17% and conservative activist Bernadette Wilson at 16%.

Polymarket shows a similarly strong Begich position: 49% on $1.1 million in volume, compared with Wilson at 26% and Taylor at 13%. The size of that Polymarket volume makes the governor’s race one of the more actively traded statewide primary markets of the cycle.

The same caveat applies here as in the Senate race. Begich’s lead reflects a consolidated Democratic lane against a fragmented Republican field, not necessarily a declaration that Alaska is about to elect a Democratic governor. The top-four format allows several Republicans to advance, and November could look much redder after the GOP vote has fewer candidates dividing the ballot.

Still, the prediction markets action matters. Alaska is often firmly Republican territory. On Tuesday, it will be one of the most closely watched laboratories for whether a top-four system, a fractured GOP field, and locally branded Democrats can create a genuinely competitive statewide map.
