AT&T works with OpenAI to streamline in-house legal work

AT&T said it is working with OpenAI on LegalEdge, a legal operations team built to improve access to legal knowledge and scale casework.

AT&T is working with OpenAI to make legal knowledge easier to access inside its law department, according to an OpenAI post published Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026. The effort centers on LegalEdge, a team the telecoms company has been using to rethink intake, support legal judgment and scale selected parts of its legal workflow.

Evidence and context

The OpenAI material does not provide a detailed operational breakdown, but it frames the collaboration as part of AT&T’s broader attempt to design and evaluate legal workflows with AI tools. Background material verified as of Oct. 21, 2026 says LegalEdge is a center of expertise within AT&T’s Legal Department launched in January 2026, although AT&T’s Oct. 8 announcement did not specify the launch day. AT&T said the team handled nearly 100 matters in its first six months.

AT&T’s Oct. 8, 2026 announcement said the collaboration with OpenAI is intended to improve access to institutional knowledge across the Legal Department. It also said lawyers retain control over AI-agent use, with confidentiality, governance, accountability and human judgment positioned as central guardrails. The company identified David McAtee as senior executive vice president and general counsel and Bill Ryan as senior vice president and chief compliance officer, but the announcement did not set out LegalEdge’s full reporting chain.

Available background indicates LegalEdge is led by Brendan McMurrer, vice president and associate general counsel, and includes attorneys, paralegals, legal operations professionals and e-discovery specialists. Ava Guo, assistant vice president and senior legal counsel, focuses on technology, process and professional upskilling, and her e-discovery and legal technology group moved into LegalEdge. The team’s work includes factual development, document review and production, legal research and drafting, case chronologies, witness-preparation materials, privilege logs, project management and process improvement with departmental lawyers and outside counsel.

The staffing and process details suggest the project is aimed at workflow design rather than automated legal decision-making. The published job description for a Lead Attorney position says AI-assisted outputs require human review and quality controls, and describes the role as non-supervisory. AT&T’s materials also emphasize production-hour requirements and quantitative and qualitative quality measures.

Separate market data supplied with the source package showed AT&T shares at $21.945 as of 2026-10-21T18:07:25Z, down 6.30% on the day, with a market capitalization of $152.43 billion. That market snapshot is distinct from the legal-operations announcement and does not by itself indicate a causal link.
